Pros And Cons Of ChatGPT

blog

Bini Dahal

Every Tuesday, I brainstorm ideas to write a weekly article. This week, my brain immediately jumped to ‘ChatGPT’, an increasingly popular artificial intelligence bot. I cannot help but let out a laugh as I navigate and search it: “I need to write a funny article on you”. And it replies, “Sure, go ahead! I'm always happy to bring a smile to people's faces. However, I must warn you that as an artificial intelligence language model, I don't have feelings or emotions, so feel free to be as creative as you want.” So now ‘I’ kind of feel forced to come up with a humorous content, but I am not going to give it a try.

ChatGPT came to my life when I was going through a very difficult situation. I was searching for some theories to link them to my article.

And Google search engine was failing to give me a proper answer. While asking around for some ideas, I was advised to give this site a try. Reluctant and unsure of the source of the content, I searched for the theory and lo! It presented me with the answer that I so wanted.

The moment felt like, “Even impossible says I’m possible”. After surfing on the Google search engine for a week straight, I finally found a site that answered my question in minutes. I was over the moon until I realised I needed concrete citations. And this site could not present me with any references. So, I was in a state of confusion but at least I got a good idea. ChatGPT felt like a long-lost friend so I nurtured my affection towards it. I concluded my search by saying “thanks my friend”. However, it paused, processed and took quite some time to reply “you are welcome”.

ChatGPT now seems to have emerged as a big help for many. According to the publisher Finbold, it was the most searched word in China, followed by Nepal. Being a fellow Nepali, I understand the mentality of wanting everything ready-made. I refer to ChatGPT as an unstoppable force that authorities have forcefully prohibited to encourage people to rely on their own reasoning and mental abilities. Also, competitive exams become no more contentious if everyone comes out on top just by searching a few keywords.

After saying all that, I am in no way against technology. Isn’t it wonderful that it finds us answers and clears our confusions? But to what extent it should be used is the question. Getting a degree through AI could be a very wonderful flex for individuals born in this era but we cannot miss the level of creativity that our own brain can generate when put into duty to think. I have no alternative but to show a link between an artificial intelligence bot and an open book exam. Open book exam is all about creativity. But at the end of the day, we are just being creative in our search for answers and nothing more.

Having said all of this, now that such a technology exists, let’s use it the right way. Because everyone believes in ChatGPT so much, I would like to mention that it agrees with my thought and has asked me to relay the same message.
