Bird flu detected in Kathmandu

By A Staff Reporter,Kathmandu, Feb. 7: Bird flu outbreak has been confirmed in three separate places of the  Kathmandu Valley. According to spokesperson for the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Department Prakash Kumar Sajnel, bird flu, also known as avian influenza (H5N8),  has been confirmed in the chickens reared at the farms of Nepal Agriculture Research Council, Lalitpur, Nagarjun Municipality-6 and Tarkeshwor Municipality in Kathmandu.

The first case of  bird flu was confirmed at the research farm of the Nepal Agricultural Research Council (NARC) in Khumaltar, Lalitpur, on Friday, said Sajnel. He said that as only small number of birds were in the research farm, and they were destroyed immediately after detecting the infection. 

Similarly, the ministry informed that bird flu infection has also been confirmed in a farm of Nagarjun Municipality 6 on Saturday. Around 4,500 chickens and 2,200 eggs of the firm were destroyed.

Sanjel said that a team deployed from the concerned bodies also destroyed chickens at the place where bird flu outbreak was confirmed in Tarakeshwar Municipality.

“Skilled manpower has been mobilised and all possible measures have been taken in cooperation with the livestock service related bodies to control the spread of bird flu,” he added.
