Japan grants Rs. 2.6 billion to reconstruct BP Highway
The government of Japan has agreed to provide financial support worth R. 2.6 billion for the repair and reconstruction of the BP Highway, which was damaged by the floods in September last year. The government of Nepal and JICA signed a grant agreement of up to 2.8 billion Japanese Yen (Rs. 2.6 billion) for the Emergency Rehabilitation of Sindhuli Road Affected by Floods on Thursday. Secretary at the Ministry of Finance (MoF) Ghanashyam Upadhaya and Ambassador of Japan to Nepal Maeda Toru signed the exchange of notes for the same.
Voting rights for expats under review
The Election Commission (EC) is preparing to send its response to the Home Ministry regarding a draft ordinance that seeks to grant voting rights to Nepalis living abroad. The government plans to introduce the ordinance to ensure that Nepali citizens residing overseas can participate in national elections. To this end, the Home Ministry has prepared amendments to several existing laws and forwarded them to the EC for feedback.
Public hearings planned for long-stalled West Seti hydro project
Public hearings are planned to prepare the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report for the long-awaited 800 MW West Seti Hydroelectricity Project, which has been a dream for the past four decades. The report will be shared with local residents of the affected areas for feedback. The Indian company NHPC Limited is conducting the public hearing in several villages in the affected areas of Bajhang, Doti, Dadeldhura, and Baitadi, as part of the preparation of the EIA report.
16 children rescued from India handed over to related families
The Nepali children trafficked to various places of Bombay, Delhi and Bihar cities in India were rescued with the help of an Indian charity, 'Kin India'. They were handed over to the related family members in the presence of officiating secretary at Ministry of Sports and Social Welfare of Madhes Province, Ranjit Yadav.
