In writing and general discussion, we often think of levity and gravity as mutually exclusive, that serious issues should not be presented humorously, and humour must not discuss weighty
Winter is upon us, bringing with it frigid mornings and chilly days. If possible, this is the season to stay in bed all day, wrapped in blankets and/or in front of a heater. But, since that is not feasi

Winter is a good season for many reasons – it is easier to sleep, kids get a month or more off from school, it becomes acceptable to lie in bed all day and some fortunate among us get to enjoy snowfall. But one thing that prevents winter from being great is the pollution it brings. The colder
Predominantly, stories crafted for young adults share certain thematic consistencies – a young protagonist reluctantly taking up responsibilities beyond their age; characters exploring their identities, questioning who they are and where they belong; parental figures, or a lack thereof, and their influence on the protagonist; and metaphorical presentation of real-world challenges. As a young adult fantasy, Rishi Amatya’s debut novel ‘Rad
The last few weeks saw AI-generated images flood Nepali social media. Beautiful, awe-inspiring, and, depending on the prompt, eerily realistic, these images found many fans online. People hurried to AI-based platforms to see what they could get the algorithm to create. Some generated fantastical reimaginings of Nepali landmarks; others created enactments of religious stories and folktales; and others still present

In today’s fast-paced and digitally connected world, it is getting increasingly challenging for professionals to strike a balance between staying online for work and avoiding the pitfalls of excessive internet use. Lore has it that in their journey to the afterlife, the deceased are stopped at the Yamadwar, the gateway to the Realm of Death, and are asked if they have ever watched Lalitpur’s Narsingha Jatra and observed Changu Narayan’s Akhanda Deep (eternal lamp). Those that have, gain entry; those that have not might not. The Narsingha Jatra occurs every year five days after the Janai Purnima while the Akhanda Deep is lit on the 12th day of the bright fortnight of the lunar month of Kartik (Kartik Shukla Dwadashi), which fell on Friday this year. “People from all over Kathmandu Valley come to get an auspicious view of the Deep,” Chakra Dharananda Rajopadhyaya, priest of the Changu Narayan Temple, shared with The Rising Nepal. “Devotees also circumambulate the Narayan Temple 108 times on that day,” he added.
Winter has arrived. The sun, our fierce enemy until a few months ago, is now a cherished friend. But no matter how much we may not want to, we must wake up, because we have schools or offices to go to. So, let us explore a few strategies to conquer the frosty mornings and overcome the laziness the season imposes upon us. One of the most important ways we can set ourselves u
A total of 117,306 tourists came to Nepal by air in October. This is the highest recorded number of tourists to arrive in the country on aeroplanes in a single month. Previously, the largest number of tourists to come to Nepal by flights in a month was 113,816. This number was recorded in October 2019. October 2023, however, surpassed that by 3.06 per cent. So far 809,678 foreign tourists have flown into Nepal in 2023, as per the data compiled by the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB). This is 81.30 per cent of the total tourist arrivals by air the country witnessed in 2019, the year immediately before the pandemic and the year that recorded Nepal’s highest tourist numbers ever (995,884 tourists arrived by air and 201,307 arrived via land routes). These are encouraging numbers that indicate that the nation is on track to meet its target of bringing 1 million tourists in 2023, Mani Raj Lamichhane, director of the Research, Planning and Monitoring Department at NTB, told The Rising Nepal.
In recent years, there seems to have been a remarkable surge in the number of people bringing the outdoors in by adorning their homes and offices with indoor plants. Be it near doors, on the stairs or in strategic locations in various rooms, indoor plants appear to be a growing trend, which is a great thing because, in addition to enhancing the aesthetics of living and working spaces, indoor plants have been found to improve air quality, reduce stress levels and enhance overall well-being. However, before choosing to invite a leafy companion into our rooms and cubicles, we must first ensure that we have the will, time and resources necessary to take care of them. Those w
