Square Palace with natural water source discovered in Panditpur

By Our Correspondent,Parasi,Feb.1: Significant archaeological structures have been discovered during the second phase of excavation at Panditpur (Kolnagar), believed to be the ancient capital of the Koliya republican state, located in Ramgram Municipality of West Nawalparasi.

Recent research conducted by a team from the Department of Archaeology has revealed the remains of a grand square palace, along with a natural water spring inside the palace complex and a structure resembling a modern-style bathing chamber.

The excavation, led by archaeologist Bhaskar Gyawali, has brought to light various pieces of evidence of ancient engineering and lifestyle. The palace is estimated to cover an area of around five katthas, with walls, well-organised rooms and alleyways identified within the complex.

The presence of an advanced water system, an independent water source within the palace, wells and separate bathing chambers reflects a luxurious and well-planned lifestyle of the time.

Historical artefacts, including Kushan-era bricks, distinctive earthenware, and everyday household items, further confirm the site’s historical importance.

According to the Department of Archaeology, preliminary carbon dating of the recovered materials suggests that the site dates back to around 600 BC, even predating Buddha’s era.

Geophysical surveys indicated that the ancient city was developed based on a “chakra system”. Experts estimate that the historic city, comprising an inner and outer settlement, extended across nearly 100 bighas.

Narad Yadav, a member of the excavation team and a local expert, said that although the second phase of work has been completed due to budget and time constraints, much  of the palace complex is yet to be uncovered.

Archaeologists have recommended that the site be opened to tourists and Buddhist pilgrims.

Ramgram Municipality aims to acquire or lease land in the area to develop Panditpur as a major tourist destination. If the excavation is completed, it is believed that the hidden grandeur of the Koliya dynasty will be revealed to the world.

Tulsiram Lamichhane, Tourism Focal Person and Chief of the Coordination Section at Lumbini Cultural Municipality, stressed the need to link the discovery of Panditpur with Lumbini and Ramgram.

He said that coordination is being carried out through the project implementation unit for the integrated development and promotion of such archaeological sites, so that visitors to Lumbini can also easily reach Panditpur.

Local governments and experts have shown strong interest in the conservation and promotion of this historic discovery. Ramgram Mayor Dhanpat Yadav said the municipality is serious about developing the area, considering Panditpur’s historical significance.

“Panditpur is the heart of the Koliya republic. The palaces and ancient structures found here have added to our pride,” he said.
