By Phadindra Adhikari,Lekhnath, Aug. 24: An avalanche in Korbang of Thasang Rural Municipality-2 has blocked the Boksi River, a tributary of Kaligandaki River.

Locals reported that about 90 per cent of the water flow in the river has decreased due to the blockage until evening.

The blocked area is 18 kilometres away from the Jomsom, the district headquarters of Mustang.

Chief District Officer of Mustang, Janak Raj Panta, informed that after getting information regarding the avalanche, precautionary measures were taken to reduce the potential risk in the coastal areas.

There are nine houses along the riverbank. The security team is currently in the area where those houses are located, said Panta.

“A team of Armed Police Force has been dispatched to the avalanche site to assess the situation. It will take about two hours for the team to reach there and provide an accurate update,” he said.

It is reported that the avalanche that fell from the Dhaulagiri icefall blocked the Boksi River.

Gautam Sherchan, the spokesperson for the rural municipality, stated that they were far from the incident site. As a result, they deployed a drone, with assistance from the Chief District Officer’s office, to capture images of the site and assess the damage.

“The blockage is slowly clearing, and the river has begun to flow. We hope the avalanche will not cause further harm,” he said.
