Parts of northern India are experiencing a severe, prolonged cold wave that has thrown everyday life out of gear. Dense fog has delayed more than a hundred flights and dozens of trains, causing chaos at airports and railway stations.

So the collapse of tourism during the pandemic has had a devastating impact on the elephants and their owners, who no longer earn enough to look after them.

Woman's death in horrific hit-and-run shocks India
The gruesome death of a 20-year-old woman in India's capital Delhi on 1 January has shocked the country. Media reports say the woman, who was an event manager, was returning from work in the early hours of 1 January when her scooter collided with a car. Police say the driver of the car, which had four other passengers, kept driving it for miles, dragging the woman's body along.
Tesla says it delivered record 1.3 million vehicles in 2022
Electric car maker Tesla says it delivered a record 1.3m vehicles last year, 40% more than in 2021. It comes after the company delivered more than 405,000 vehicles in the last three months of 2022.

A Myanmar military court has sentenced Aung San Suu Kyi to a further seven years in prison, taking her overall jail time to 33 years. The country's former democratically-elected leader has been under house arrest since a military ousted her government in a coup in February 2021.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's mother Heeraben Modi died at the age of 99. "A glorious century rests at the feet of God," Modi tweeted on Friday morning. He lit his mother's funeral pyre in Gandhinagar in western Gujarat state - where Heeraben lived - on Friday.
Winter storm traps Americans in cars for days
At least 28 people have died in western New York State, most of them in Buffalo, as a monster winter storm continues to batter North America. A state official said some people had been trapped in cars for more than two days during what was "probably" the worst storm of their lifetime.
China ends Covid quarantine for travellers in January
China will scrap quarantine for travellers from 8 January, officials said, marking the last major shift from the country's zero-Covid policy. After three years of closed borders, this will effectively reopen the country to those with work and study visas, or seeking to visit family.
