Reading A Novel

Dixya Poudel

In the year 2018, I read more than a hundred books most of which were novels. For me reading a novel isn’t just pure escape, it is also a passion that is gearing up to be a long-lasting pursuit. I read novels eagerly and widely. And to say that reading is my vocation is an understatement.
Novels have been around human civilisation for quite some time. A novel is a fictional work that may or may not be based on reality. Wikipedia defines a novel as "a relatively long work of narrative fiction, normally written in prose form, and which is typically published as a book." Historical novels inform us about history of mankind. Suspense and mysteries spook us. Romance novels sweep us off our feet. Further, contemporary novels share relevant stories while psychological thrillers intrigue the readers.
To best read a novel, read without expectations, judgments and prejudices. Read novels with respect to the author and to the art of writing. While reading a novel, enjoy the atmosphere of the book and try to understand the perspectives of the characters. Remember, it is okay to discontinue reading a book if it doesn’t appeal to you. I also suggest reading book reviews to compare your thoughts to that of fellow readers'. Nowadays, social media has a separate space for book reviews. For example, Instagram users can create an account solely for books and such accounts are termed as 'bookstagrams.'
For me personally, the element of surprise is crucial in reading a novel. Not all readers react the exact same way after reading a novel. The book is the same but the reactions are entirely personal and subjective to the readers. I have read novels about places I have never been to. I have read about interesting people in extraordinary circumstances or ordinary people in ordinary circumstances and loved both the stances. I can tell if I am going to be fully immersed in a novel within a few pages. However, my response to a novel also depends on my everyday life. And I often switch genres of novels for more versatile reads.
A good novel knows how to entice the readers with its plots, settings, descriptions, narration and characters. Read a novel to engage your mind on human nature and to test your imagination. Further, read a novel as if you are befriending the author. But narrators of novels can be unreliable, so keep an open mind especially if you are reading a mystery. Remember that reading a novel is a rewarding intellectual activity. Sometimes it may just be the perfect way to overcome every day stresses.
It is a known fact that reading enhances our knowledge. And novels can fuel a reader's imagination. However, there are some people who assume that novels are just a form of escapism. They couldn’t be more wrong. Reading novels make us empathetic and more in tune to human nature and its reality. While we are immersed in the imaginary worlds of novels, we emerge later as a wiser and considerate being.
Reading novels opens up conversations on relevant and contemporary issues not just in the virtual platform but also on real life with friends, family and even strangers. Therefore, let us read novels to edify ourselves on the nuances of humanity.
