In Praise Of Autumn

Parmeshwar Devkota

As I shared my view with my spouse that the autumn is the best season of the year, she simply disagreed with me. She said, “Basanta Ritu (March-April) is the best of seasons.” She attempted to justify her logic, citing oodles of literary works devoted to the praise of the spring season. She wanted me to follow what others believe.
When I solicited the views of other members of the family and neighbours, they divided on the matter. Some opined that they liked winter while others loved spring and some others winter.
In the country where free will is celebrated as the cardinal value of constitution, it is unwise to impose one’s personal view on others. Nor is it rational to take another’s opinion granted. Every person has his/her individual perception of life, society and nature. On subjective topics, family members are poles apart owing to different line of thoughts, taste and biological instincts. So, family members may not surely prefer your ideas and feelings despite living together.
Here, I would like to express my views in favour of autumn which readers may or may not consent to it.
With the start of autumn (September-November), torrential rains begin to relent and scorching sun turns mild. As you look at the sky, you will find it spreading in deep blue colour. If you go for a morning walk, you will breathe fresh cool breeze. If you cast a glance at mountains in far distance, they appear to be marching towards you. And the canopy of vegetations and their colours become majestic ever before to feast your eyes on.
If you happen to pass through paddy fields in the morning, your inner heart gets elated as sprouting paddy shoots stroke you in a friendly way. A nursery farm on the way can mesmerise you. In this season, you can see rows of big and small flowering plants. The aroma of blooming Gerbera Daisy, rose, chrysanthemum and sunflower will certainly enthral you. You cannot help praising the full bloom of small flowers like orchid, lily, iris, kangaroo paw and gypsophila.
Apple, pear, plum, guava, persimmon, pineapple, pomegranate and sugar apple are major fruits of this season. Though some of these fruits can be available in the market in all seasons, you relish the real taste of these fruits only in autumn.
If you happen to come across a settlement early in the morning, you will see house owners weeding out grasses around their compounds, and community to welcome festivals-- Bada Dashain, Tihar and Chhat. If you closely glance at your locality, you will certainly see many children making and flying kites in a jubilant mood at noon.
This is also the season of green vegetables of various types such as spinach, fenugreek leaf, garden cress, fresh coriander and beet root which help you keep the deadly virus like the coronavirus at bay.
Considering a variety of vegetation and great enthusiasm among people of various age-groups, autumn is perhaps the most beautiful season. So poet John Donne writes: No spring or summer beauty hath such grace as I have seen in one autumnal face.
