Hail To Spring

Dixya Poudel

Spring arrives on the Northern hemisphere in March. Every year on the vernal equinox, the winter season gives way to the brightness of spring days. While winter is the season of dreary cold days, spring is the promise of warmer days and with it an agreeable change in the weather.
Nature certainly works in tandem to its own laws that humanity has taken centuries to comprehend. While the humankind rules over the planet, it still has to contend with nature and its predictable and unpredictable nuances. And like clockwork, the seasons in nature rotate each year. Since they are inevitable, seasons continue to have a significant influence over the lives of people. They govern the daily routines of people in both conspicuous and inconspicuous ways throughout the world.
As such, spring starts on the month of March and lasts till the beginning of summer on summer solstice. People especially love the spring season because it means lighter clothes, warmer sun and no more huddling in the cold. More importantly, it signals re-growth. Flowers sprout buds. Rain falls intermittently and birds chirp in nature. Plants that withered in the winter sprout new leaves. It means greeneries abound along with light or heavy rainfalls that abate the chill of winter air. Daytimes lengthen as nighttimes shorten. No more layers of clothes, air frosting on each breath and the icy winds that breeze outdoors.
Typically in winter, animals hibernate and birds migrate to warmer places. In spring, however, animals come out of their hibernation and birds migrate back as the nature signals growth and abundance. Snow melts in the mountains and the rivers swell. Further, it is an ideal time to travel as the weather is much suitable for outdoors' adventures. The nation has already seen an increase in domestic tourism thanks to the pleasant weather. And human lives benefit from this shift in weather while the mercury rises.
Especially the elderly and the infirm are vulnerable to bodily ailments in cold days. In spring, there is vigour in the human bodies as the physiology adjusts to the soar in temperature. Farmers rejoice as the rainfalls hit the dry lands after the dry spells of winter. They plant new crops in their fields that certainly welcome the bountiful rains. People get out of the stifling indoors to enjoy the shift in the weather after the funk of chilly days.
In Gregorian calendar, there are four seasons while in Nepali calendar there are six seasons and spring means "Basanta" in Nepali. Additionally, the Nepali New Year falls on this season. According to the Nepali calendar, the New Year's Day falls on the first day of Baishakh which is a national holiday. Nepalis take this time to recalibrate their lives and start the New Year with renewed hope, fervour and enthusiasm. Likewise, societies throughout the world commemorate spring in their traditional ways.
Since December 2020, the world has been struggling with the coronavirus pandemic with devastating consequences. And the health experts feared a spike in virus cases in the winter season. However, now that the Northern hemisphere greets the spring season, there are hopes of changes and resurgence in the air. With every bud that sprouts and flower that blooms, spring heralds a welcome change.
