Kathmandu, Jan. 4: Meteorologists have predicted light drizzles in some places of the mountain region and snowfall in high Himalaya regions as the weather across the country has become cloudy from Sunday.
“Most parts of the country have witnessed the development of low pressure system due to the effect of the westerly winds and this has caused high chances of rains and snowfall in most parts of the country for next three days from Sunday,” senior meteorologist Min Kumar Aryal, at the Meteorological Forecasting Division under the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM), said.
From Sunday, there is a possibility of partial to moderate formation of clouds in Sudurpaschim, Karnali, Lumbini and Gandaki provinces with light to moderate snowfall in high hilly and mountainous areas and light rains in the hilly and lowland areas, Aryal said.
There is a possibility of partial to moderate cloud cover in most parts of Bagmati Province, Province 1 and Province 2 from January 3 to 6, he added. There is a possibility of a slight drop in maximum and minimum temperatures due to rain and snowfall and cold is likely to increase across the country for a few days, he said.
The DHM has requested all travellers, trekkers and mountaineers to be careful to avoid cold and possible snowfall.
Meanwhile, Barun Poudel, another senior meteorologist at DHM, said that the first winter rainfall was likely in Kathmandu and other parts of the country within next three days.
“Although this system (low pressure) developed from today is not seen strong, it may help cause light to moderate rains,” Poudel said.
He said minimum temperature across the country may plummet further after the first winter rain.
On Sunday, Kathmandu recorded 2.5 degrees Celsius of minimum temperature and 20.5 of maximum temperature.
Jumla meteorological station measured the lowest minimum temperature with minus 3.5 degrees Celsius on Sunday.
