Kathmandu, Sept. 6: Ageing Nepal, the organisation working for the wellbeing and rights of the senior citizens in Nepal, has received the UNESCO King Sejong Literacy Prize.
The prize carries a purse of USD 20,000.
“We were awarded the prize for our work on Education for senior citizens as their rights. We have been running Basic Literacy Class for senior citizens since 2016,” said Krishna Murari Gautam ‘Chatyang Master’, chairman of Ageing Nepal.
Established in 1989 with the support of the Government of the Republic of Korea, the prize is presented to two organisations annually.
The UNESCO, however, will announce the winners of the prize formally only on Tuesday (Sept. 8), on the occasion of the International Education Day.
Dr. Baburam Adhikari, assistant general secretary of Nepal National Commission for UNESCO, Ministry of Education, Science and Technology Nepal, confirmed that Ageing Nepal led by Krishna Murari Gautam was one of the recipients of the prestigious prize this year.
“Receiving the prize by Ageing Nepal was a matter of pride for the country,” Dr. Adhikari said. Ageing Nepal has been working for the senior citizens since 2011.
“Our ultimate objective is to include education for the senior citizens in the national education policy of the government,” Gautam told The Rising Nepal.
