By TRN Online, Kathmandu, July 29: Sugarcane farmers of Sarlahi and Nawalparasi districts have come to Kathmandu to spotlight that they have not received the amount of the sugarcane they sold to the sugar mills years ago.
The government had pledged the farmers that it would ensure that all the farmers get the amount by the third week of January in the 5-point deal between the government and the then agitating sugarcane farmers inked on 28 December 2020.
Hari Shyam, secretary of the sugarcane farmers struggle committee, Sarlahi, said that the farmers were again in Kathmandu to get the outstanding amount of Rs. 410 million from the sugar mills.
He said the farmers were yet to get 41 million rupees from six sugar mills. "We will again propose that the government takes a step so that the mills give us our money by mid-September and if that does not happen we will have no option but to take to the street."
Sugarcane farmers from across the country, particularly the Terai region, had staged a protest in Kathmandu in December last year demanding that the mills pay them the sale amount of the sugarcane. A sugarcane farmer had died in course of the protest.
