By Our Correspondent, Nawalparasi, Aug. 1: Garbage management has emerged as a major challenge in municipalities of East Nawalparasi.

Due to the lack of proper management of waste in Debchuli, Kawasoti, Gaindakot and Madhyabindu municipalities of the district, locals there are suffering a lot.

They said that those municipalities were facing an uphill battle managing the waste. Bomlal Pandey, a resident of Kawasoti Municipality, said there should be a provision of a dumping site prior to the declaration of municipalities.

Saroj Acharya of Debchuli Municipality said that the stench emanating from the garbage pile has even spread into market areas and that burning of plastic waste by people for the management of waste had adversely affected the environment.

Shalikram Sapkota, the chairperson of SODEC Nepal, said burning plastic that way posed a grave risk to people's health.

Though the municipalities expressed their commitment towards managing the waste many times before, they have done little to manage it properly.

Lal Kumar Bhattarai of Madhyabindu said that the market area of Madhyabindu Municipality was becoming a source of foul smell because of the authorities’ failure to implement various agreements reached with the local stakeholders
