By Mukunda Subedi, Bardiya, Mar. 31: Rhino census has begun in Bardiya National Park from today. The counting will take place for 14 days with the help of 10 elephants in the park.
A total of 50 people have been deployed for the counting. Rhinos in the riverbank of Karnali and Babai River and in the community forests of the surrounding area will be counted in the census.
Along with counting, the number of Rhinos, the details as to their habitat and condition of other wild animals will also be collected. GPS system, camera, and binoculars will be used in the census, informed Bishnu Prasad Shrestha, chief conservation officer of the national park.
A total of 29 Rhinos were counted in the census done in 2015 AD. The National Park has anticipated that the number might increase this year.
"Usually, the Rhino census is carried out within a span of four to five years. The census could not kick-off last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic," said Shrestha.
