Kathmandu, Nov. 25: The National Human Right Commission (NHRC) has urged the government to effectively implement the policy, programme and law so as to prevent and end violence against women.

The constitutional human rights watchdog called the government to ensure effective implementation of Domestic Violence (Offense and Punishment) Act, 2066 BS and Regulations, 2067 BS and also to make timely amendment to these laws.

Issuing a press statement on Thursday, NHRC Spokesperson Dr Tikaram Pokharel asked the human rights defenders, civil society and households to act on their own for elimination of gender-based violence (GBV).

The 16-day activism against gender-based violence has kicked off today with the slogan 'Let us begin from home; Let us end gender violence'.

The NHRC has also urged the rights defenders, civil society and other actors and stakeholders to advance activism on violence against women in an effective and meaningful manner.

The commission is preparing to produce and unveil a national monitoring report focusing on the status of VAW, its forms, causes and mitigation measures in the country.
