Dhangadhi, Sept. 30: Farmers here are greatly worried as the paddy stalks at their fields failed to yield grains even at the start of harvesting season.
The hybrid varieties of paddy- Garima and Sinduri—failed to give any grains even though the early paddy harvesting season has already begun.
“The paddy plants grew smoothly and became tall but have not yielded grains. We have lost both money and labour,” said farmer Umakanta Bhandari of Gauriganga Municipality-9.
He had planted paddy of Garima variety in 15 kattha of land.
The farmers were expecting to increase production by planting hybrid seeds, but they felt that they were cheated.
They demanded compensation from the local agro shops from where they had bought hybrid seeds of paddy.
Another farmer Jaganath Devkota has also become sad after the paddy plants did not yield.
He planted paddy of Sindri in 10 kattha of land.
“The seeds production company and distributors should provide compensation to the farmers,” he said.
The Agriculture Directorate Dipayal inspected the paddy field by forming a task force after paddy did not yield.
Chief of the Agriculture Directorate Dipayal Yaga Raj Joshi said that the Garima verities of paddy did not yield due to defects in seeds.
He said that fake species of Garima did not give yield.
The farmers planted Garima species of paddy at around 600 to 700 bighas of land in two districts.
