Sarlahi, Jan. 18: The price of tomatoes has come down by half due to the large quantity of tomatoes entering the market. This is the main season for the production of tomatoes in Sarlahi.
Tomatoes are now being sold at Rs. 400 per crate in Lalbandi, known as the city of tomatoes. That price was Rs. 800 to Rs. 1,000 per crate till two weeks ago. When a farmer sells a crate of tomatoes for Rs. 400, he or she is getting Rs. 16 per kilogram.

One crate contains 25 kg of tomatoes.
Farmer Juna Ghimire of Lalbandi Municipality-17, Raniganj, complained that the price of tomatoes was declining every year because of the sufficient production.
She said that they had been forced to sell the tomatoes at the price set by the traders as they would rot in the farms if not sold immediately.

Farmers in the northern part of Lalbandi and Hariwan Municipality, which cultivate tomatoes commercially, are now busy picking and selling tomatoes in the market. In this season, farmers earn good money by selling tomatoes.
Mohammad Usman, a trader at Lalbandi Wholesale Vegetable Market, said that the price of tomato has been declining for the past few days.

Trader Usman said that they are sending the tomatoes bought from the farmers to Kathmandu, Narayanghat, Birgunj, Sindhuli and other places.
