By Shesh Kant Pandit, Kathmandu, Mar. 22: The Tribhuvan University (TU) is going to organize the academic session in such a way as to minimize the loss of time of students which was halted midst the COVID-19 infection.

The university has informed that the students studying in the annual system will have to bear some loss but the students studying in the semester system will have no loss.

Professor Dr Shivlal Bhusal, Head of education at the university, informed that this academic session has been started enrolling students at the undergraduate level from March 9.

The university plans to conduct the examination of the students currently enrolled at the undergraduate level in January of the upcoming year.

In addition, the university has decided to hold a new academic session at the end of April for the graduate levels.

He said that the new graduate enrollment can be started from April if the results of the third year examination of the undergraduate level are published within the stipulated time.

It is said that the results of other years of the undergraduate level will be published within the stipulated time. He informed that even if the student studying in the first year undergraduate loses sometimes, it will be fixed within the three years.

He said that the online classes of the students studying under the annual system could not be conducted effectively and the students had suffered a few months of loss.

With the decision of the university to start the undergraduate admission program in March, the students who have passed class 12 have to wait for a few months for admission.

The National Examination Board has stated that the annual examination of class 12 will be completed in June and the results will be published by September.

Professor Dr Chandra Mani Poudel, Chairman of the Board, said that the results of class 12 would be published by September and this will open a way for them to study at the undergraduate level.

But if the university doesn’t make any change to the current plan, then the students will have to wait a few months to be admitted to the undergraduate level.

Students who get their bachelor's degree in September will be admitted only after waiting for five months.

Even though March is considered an academic session, if the new situation develops, there is an option to shift the graduation session to December, said Bhusal. It states that decisions can be made according to the circumstances, he added.

Lack of Coordination

It has been found that there is not much coordination between the board responsible for conducting secondary level examinations and publishing and the admission of students at the undergraduate level.

According to Poudel, the chairman of the board, there is no discussion between the board and the university on how to organize the academic session.

He said there was no formal mechanism between the board and the university to discuss the issue.

Suggesting to start the new academic session in December, he said that it would help in managing the time of the students studying at the undergraduate level. Bhusal, head of the Tribhuvan University of Education, said that the students can start their studies from March by opening the enrollment in December.
