NMA prepares profile of 414 peaks allowed for climbing

Kathmandu, Nov. 26: Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA), the sole alpine club of Nepal, has prepared profiles of all 414 peaks which have been permitted by the government for climbing activities.
Santa Bir Lama, president of NMA, said that the committee formed to prepare mountain profiles of all 414 peaks of Nepal open for climbing has completed its task. “Our team has completed works regarding the preparation of profiles of mountains and it will be submitted to the government soon,” Lama said.
“We are communicating with the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation (MoCTCA) for the submission and release of the report by organising a special event on the occasion of VNY 2020,” Lama said.
He said that the mountain profile would be a special offering to the climbers on the occasion of VNY 2020. A committee was formed to make a detailed profile of 414 peaks which have been open for climbing by the government of Nepal some three years ago.
Lama said that a climber could get all required information for a climber in just a click after the publication of mountain profile.
Lama said that the detailed information about the peaks, including picture of the peaks, heights and the climbing routes of each mountain. He said that the profile also provides information about the amount of government royalty for climbing particular peaks and the mountain ranges that can be viewed from atop the peak.
According to Lama, huge resources have been spent in preparing the profile of the mountains. The committee had used helicopter to take pictures and gather other information about the peaks, he added.
Director General of the Department of Tourism (DoT) Dandu Raj Ghimire said that the government would promote the mountain profile prepared by the NMA as a special offering to mountain lovers on the occasion of VNY 2020.
Ghimire said that the DoT has proposed to provide 100 per cent waiver in royalty amount to 33 virgin peaks of Nepal on the occasion of VNY. Out of 414 peaks allowed by the government to climb, of 33 peaks have been found to be still virgin, he said, adding that royalty waiver was offered to promote these peaks.
The DoT has proposed to provide these 33 peaks to NMA for its promotion. Currently, NMA is handling different 27 peaks to issue permission and promotion.
