Kathmandu, Feb. 2: Metropolitan Traffic Police Office has started a new modality to mobilise traffic police for the improvement of the traffic system and reduce fatal accidents in the Valley.
All 44 units of Traffic Police inside the Valley have given 50 questionnaires with 400 total marks to solve within three months period.
“Questions are not to write on the paper but to show with their performance and hard work,” said Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Bhim Prasad Dhakal.
Valley traffic office has started different campaigns and programmes to reduce fatal accidents and to make people aware about the traffic system as well as to make them responsible towards the system. Imparting Road Safety Education for road users, especially the vulnerable ones, has been and continues to be a priority for the traffic police, SSP Dhakal said.
“To make all those happen, first we need to make our traffic police smart and capable. To make their work effective and countable, we have started the new modality in all 44 units,” he said.
"Not all traffic police are capable of anything; they also need training and encouragement, so this testing system would make them more responsible and honest towards their service and to service recipients," SSP Dhakal added.
“Every unit has inspector, sub-inspector, constable, head constable and in-charge, and if every unit has a competitive environment with different units who give the best service, the system will change," he said.
SSP Dhakal said, “The valley traffic system would be much better if we evaluate every work done by every unit.”
The main work that should be done by traffic police every day is divided into 50 questions and every number. The questionnaire is being distributed in every unit to implement it within the given time period. “The given questionnaire should be solved within three months period and the numbers will be given as per their performance,” he said.
If any unit coordinates with Kathmandu Metropolitan City for road management and parking management, the Unit will get the number. Similarly, if any unit punishes 25 vehicles for speeding, the Unit will get the number, SSP Dhakal said.
SSP Dhakal said, “The questions are not new and tough, they have to do with day-to-day issues every traffic police faces and are happening around them. Every unit has to solve them and they will be awarded distinction, first, second and third division as per their numbers with performance.”
Controlling speed, road management, traffic management, crossing-road management, right turn management and public awareness and some motivational work are some of the works given in the questions to be solved by every unit.
The unit which gets the highest score will be rewarded in a formal programme on the day of Nepali New Year. Those getting the lowest score would be exchanged for the responsibility given earlier, SSP Dhakal said.
“This modality would encourage every traffic police to perform better and also make them more responsible towards their work,” he said.
This modality would help to discourage promotion through political connections, he added. They should perform at any cost and change is possible, SSP Dhakal added.
