Kathmandu, Oct. 17: The BBC on Wednesday revealed its list of 100 inspiring and influential women from around the world for 2019. Bonita Sharma has made it to the top 100 list as an inspiring innovator under its Knowledge category and made Nepal proud.
“Inspired by her mum's determination to obtain a degree despite pressure to become a housewife, Bonita Sharma helps educate and empower women and girls in her native Nepal,” the BBC noted on its website.
“In a bid to tackle child deaths to malnutrition, she designed Nutribeads, a bracelet for new mums with different coloured beads to remind them what to feed their babies. Her projects have been awarded funding from the UNESCO Malala Fund for Girls' Right to Education, and she has founded her own organisation to empower women and girls: The Social Change makers and Innovators (SOCHAI).”
The BBC noted, “There are people in the world, who are facing the devastating consequences of inequality in health, education and nutrition right now, and there are women and girls who are working relentlessly to change this status quo. I hope every woman and girl will have an opportunity to reach their full potential in life without any discrimination. Brace yourselves for the future, because female-led global socio-economic transformation is coming!”
Earlier this year in June, Sharma, co-founder and CEO of SOCHAI had also been honoured as the winner of the Lead 2030 Challenge for Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) # 2 ‘Zero Hunger’ category initiated by One Young World and supported by the RB (Reckitt Benckiser) Group. As a winner then, Sharma was awarded US dollar 50,000 and was to receive 12 months of mentorship support from her Challenge Partner RB to help amplify the impact of her project at SOCHAI.
Every year, the BBC has been honouring and publishing a list of world’s inspiring and influential women in different sectors. This year’s list included Bonita, together with other inspiring women from worldwide.  The startup, SOCHAI, that she leads, is a youth-led initiative with a vision to improve health and nutrition of people, particularly, women, girls and children through education, innovation and entrepreneurship at grassroots level, Sharma had told The Rising Nepal in July.
The BBC is honouring Sharma for her contribution in the field of nutrition and women’s empowerment. Through the organisation, SOCHAI, she is contributing to fighting against child mortality caused due to malnutrition, by conducting a campaign through the use of innovative nutrition beads, named as ‘NutriBeads’.
BBC lists the women under the categories of Earth, Knowledge, Leadership, Creativity, Sport and Identity.
