Kathmandu, Mar. 23: The government is going to organise 'Regional Policy Dialogue on Sustainable Mountain Solutions' on March 23 and 24 in the context of the International Year of Sustainable Mountain Development-2022.

Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba is scheduled to inaugurate the Regional Policy Dialogue programme at Chandragiri Hills Resort on Wednesday.
As per the decision of the United Nations to celebrate the year 2022 as the International Year of Sustainable Mountain Development, the Ministry of Forests and Environment is going to organise various programmes throughout the year for a better solution to mountain problems. Regional policy dialogue is among the programmes, said Minister for Forest and Environment Ramsahay Prasad Yadav at a press meet on Tuesday.

The United Nations has called on all stakeholders, including governments, international organisations and non-governmental organisations, to organise various programmes throughout the year to promote the importance of mountain ecosystems.
Minister Yadav said the global interest in mountainous issues was an important opportunity for Nepal.

According to Secretary at the Ministry Dr. Pem Narayan Kandel, about 86 per cent of Nepal's land area is covered by Chure, Mahabharata, highland and mountainous areas. He also said that scientific studies have confirmed that the effects of climate change are relatively greater in mountains and mountainous areas.

In the technical session of the regional programme, working papers will be presented and discussed in five thematic areas related to the mountain environment.
It has five thematic subjects: Mountain Economy, Mountain Biodiversity and Ecosystem, Mountain Culture, Mountain Women and Mountain-Lowland Connections.

Dr. Kandel informed that two working papers will be presented by national and international experts in each technical session and two experts will comment on each working paper.
After the conclusion of the technical sessions, the issues that need to be raised by Nepal in the national policy and international forums will be prepared and presented in points.

Minister Yadav also said that there are plans to organize interaction with policymakers, a mountain conference in Mustang and a suggestion gathering seminar for (Conference of Parties) COP27.
