Kathmandu, June 11: Monsoon clouds are likely to enter Nepal’s skies from the east in a day or two, the Meteorological Forecasting Department (MFD) said on Thursday.
Due to the development of low pressure around the Bay of Bengal, monsoon onset is expected to occur from eastern Nepal in a day or two, said Meteorologist Ganga Nagarkoti.
“The eastern parts of the country may receive monsoon rain within two days. But the clouds will take around a week to spread across the country and to cause monsoon rainfall,” she said.
Talking about the current weather situation throughout the country, Nagarikati said most parts of the country had received light to moderate rainfall on Thursday.
According to her, change in weather and occurrence of rainfall have a mixed influence of westerly, eastern wind as well as local wind system.
“The meeting of the westerly wind with the local phenomenon is responsible for the rainfall in the central and western regions, while easterly wind and local wind are responsible for the rain in eastern Nepal,” she added.
She further added that the weather throughout the country would be disturbed for a few more days.
The MFD in its bulletin stated that Province 1, Bagmati Province, Gandaki Province, and Karnali Province and a few places of other provinces received light to moderate rainfall on Thursday.
According to the MFD, the Kathmandu Valley recorded 36.6 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours ending at 5:45 pm, which is the third highest rainfall recorded across the country today.
Dadeldhura received the highest rainfall, 112.1 mm, and Lumle the second highest rainfall, 46.2 mm, the MFD stated.
Nagarkoti said the country was expected to get more showers and spells of thunderstorms in the days to come.
According to the department, the country will remain generally cloudy for three more days. Light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms is likely to occur in many parts of the country, while snowfall is likely to occur in some mountainous areas.
The department has also alerted the public to stay safe as some hilly areas of Province 1, Bagmati Province, Gandaki Province and Karnali Province are likely to receive heavy rainfall.
The monsoon season in Nepal normally begins on June 10 and ends on September 23 every year. This is the third consecutive year the monsoon clouds entered Nepal after June 10.
Last year, the onset was delayed by two days and in 2019 it was delayed by 10 days. But in 2018, it began two days in advance.
