Minister Bista assures of effective implementation of minimum wages, social security

Kathmandu, Sept 18: Minister for Labour, Employment and Social Security, Gokarna Bista, said on Wednesday that workers of all sectors would be entitled social security and minimum wages.
In his address to a programme organised by the Nepal Teachers' Federation in Lalitpur today, the minister pledged that social security and minimum wages would be ensured for teachers and employees of community and private schools.
"We are aware that a section of fulltime school employees including teachers have no access to fair wages and social security," Minister Bista said, adding that the issue was under discussion in the Council of Ministers and the government would soon address the situation.
According to him, still some teachers and employees of community schools have been deprived of minimum wages.
There is a complaint that their payment starts from Rs 2,000 per month and the Ministry is clear that they must have access to minimum wages and other social security schemes .
The Minister pledged to enforce the Labour Act and contribution-based Social Security Act provisions effectively.
He took time to highlight the need of greater improvement in the quality of education to meet the Sustainable Development Goals, adding that education would play a significant role in the overall development of nation.
Federation chair Baburam Thapa shed light on the contribution of teachers to the domestic political movements, seeking an end to all sorts of discrimination against them.
Stating that economic condition of private school teachers was very pitiful, he sought the implementation of minimum wages as fixed by the existing Labour Act and of social security in every sector.
