Govt, sugarcane farmers ink deal

Kathmandu, Jan. 4: A five-point agreement was signed between the agitating sugarcane farmers and the government on Friday.
With the inking of the agreement, the sugarcane farmers have postponed their protests, which they were staging in Kathmandu for the last several days.
According to spokesperson and Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supply Dinesh Bhattarai, the ministry would coordinate and facilitate to provide all dues money to the farmers from the sugar mills by January 21.
Likewise, the government and the farmers agreed to form a taskforce led by a joint secretary of the ministry to resolve the problems of the sugarcane farmers permanently.
The taskforce will work to increase production of sugarcane, provide fertilisers, seeds and machines to the farmers, and make the sugar industry self-reliant and capable to export sugar.
Minister for Industry, Commerce and Supplies Lekhraj Bhatta hold talks with the agitating farmers to solve their problems.
Spokesperson and Joint Secretary of the Ministry Bhattarai inked the agreement on behalf of the government while Hari Shyam Raya Sarah of Sugarcane Farmers Struggle Committee signed the agreement on behalf of the agitating farmers.
The government has committed to coordinating with the line ministry, including Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development to provide subsides provided by the government to the farmers.
The sugarcane farmers from various Terai districts have been staging protest in Maitighar, Kathmandu since last Sunday after the mill owners did not pay them in time.
Earlier, the MoICS had written a letter to the Ministry of Home Affairs to arrest the mills owners who failed to pay to the sugarcane farmers.
