Kathmandu, Aug. 28: At least five persons were killed and four others went missing in the devastating floods and landslides triggered by the incessant rains across the country in the last 24 hours.
According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Authority, one person was injured and 25 houses were completely damaged in the floods and landslides, mostly in the southern plains.
Of the five killed, two were at Pamphapur in Ramgram Municipality-19 of in Nawalparasi West, and one each in Dangisharan Rural Municipality-1, Dang, Omshatiya Rural Municipality-4 in Rupandehi district, Katari Municipality-2 in Udyapur districts.

The deceased have been identified as seven-year-old Karna Magar of Katari Municipality, Bamdev Devkota, 50, of Dangisharan Rural Municipality, 38-year-old Binod Pasi and Pradeep Pasi, 13, of the same village of Ramgram Municipality-18.
The rains have affected normal life across the country. Several settlements from Dhanusha in Province 2 to Kailali in Sudurpaschin in the Terai were submerged in flood waters, with West Nawalparasi suffering the maximum brunt. Vehicular movements came to grinding halt in mountains as major highways were blocked by the landslides.

According to our Nawalparasi Correspondent, cases of inundation and landslides were reported in various parts of the district. A total of three people including two children and a woman have gone missing after a landslide hit Rumsi in Hupsekot Rural Municipality-4 on Thursday night.

The police have informed that they were buried in the debris caused by the landslip and that the rescue works were underway.
Similarly, the locals have informed that the flood have damaged the suspension bridge in Baguwan of Binayi Triveni Rural Municipality-1. In addition, various settlements in Madhyabindu Municipality, Kawasoti Municipality, Devchuli Municipality, Gaindakot Municipality, and Binayi Triveni Rural Municipality have been inundated.

The flood has also swept away diversions constructed in different areas of Gaindakot Municipality in Nawalparasi (East), thereby obstructing the highway. The police have informed that the East-West highway have been obstructed and that it would take a couple of days to resume the vehicular movement.
According to our Dhangadhi Correspondent, flooding in Mohana, Patharaiya, Kaandha, Kandra, Shivaganga, and Kataini among others have inundated various regions of Kailali district.

As reported by the District Emergency Operation Centre, a total of 166 houses were inundated in Bhajani Municipality, Janaki Rural Municipality, Dhangadhi Sub-Metropolitan City, and Kailari Rural Municipality.
Ganga Chaudhary, a local at Bhajani Municipality-2, Mohanapur, said that the floodwater had entered around 400 houses in the area.
Likewise, 138 houses have remained submerged in flood water in Janaki Rural Municipality due to flooding in the Pathraiya River.

The Police have informed that the rainfall had affected many places in Rupandehi including Lumbini, Marchawar, in the southern area of the district. “No human casualties have been recorded until now. We have been collecting the details as to the loss caused by the rain-induced disasters,” said Satyanarayan Thapa, spokesperson for the District Police Office.
As reported by our Tanahun Correspondent, the Dumre-Besisahar road section has been obstructed due to the torrential rainfall. DSP Yubaraj Timilsina of the District Police Office said that the road was obstructed due to the landslide near the Andheri stream in Bhanu Municipality-1.

DSP Timilsina informed that efforts were being made to resume transportation in coordination with Bhanu Municipality.
Our Helambu Correspondent informed that a landslide had disrupted the operation of vehicles in Helambu Highway for the last two days. Police Inspector Tikaram Rai of Area Police Office, Melamchi informed that the landslide in Ratopaharo Hill in Phatakashila of Melamchi Municipality-13 had obstructed the highway.

“As the landslip is still taking place, the locals are currently at a high risk. We have not been able to clear debris caused by the landslide due to the incessant rainfall,” said Rai.
Meanwhile, according to our Nepalgunj Correspondent, flooding in Taraua, Chilriya and Morangawa streams have inflicted damages on five houses in the Baijapur area.

The Baijapur Area Police Office informed that Chancharpharka, Chiliya, Rajpur, Buddha Chowk, and Latakaniya Villages in Rapti Sonari Rural Municipality Ward Nos.4, 5, 6 and 7 had remained inundated.
Similarly, Nepalgunj, Kohalpur, and Narainapur areas have also been affected by the rainfall.
