Kathmandu, Jan 11: There has been a sharp rise in the number of COVID-19 patients in the major hospitals of the Kathmandu Valley that are designated for the treatment of COVID-19 infection. However, medical doctors have stressed that mild symptoms of the COVID-19 have been observed in the patients that are admitted to the hospital.

According to Lilanath Bhandari, in charge of the emergency ward of the Sukraraj Tropical and Infectious Disease Hospital (STIDH), the number of COVID-19 patients admitted to the hospital, which was vacated about a week ago, is gradually increasing in the hospital.

“The number of patients has been increasing for a week now. At present three to four patients are admitted to the hospital daily,” He said. 

He informed that the patients are showing symptoms like fever and body aches and have been cured after simple treatment.

He further added that most of the patients admitted to the hospital were able to recover with normal treatment.

Similarly, Dr Prajwol Shrestha, Deputy Director at the COVID-19 Unified Central Hospital, said that the inflow of COVID-19 patients has been increasing in the hospital.

Dr Shrestha, said, “Only a week here was only eight patients of Coronavirus infection, now, after a week the number has risen to 36. This is three times more admission than just a week before.”

While describing the nature of the Coronavirus infection in the admitted patients, Dr Shrestha said that many have mild symptoms of headache, body ache, and high fever. Only a few are admitted in an emergency, but, the number of patients in the emergency ward is rising as well.

Dr Ram Bikram Adhikari, Spokesperson to the T.U. Teaching Hospital said that the number of patients before a week was just 12-14, however, currently, there are 21 admitted cases of Coronavirus infection in the hospital.

He further stressed that even though many patients have mild symptoms of COVID-19, but, the ratio of admission in emergency wards is rising.

According to him, in the second wave, the same patient had to stay in the hospital for 60/65 days. However, he said that the newly admitted patients would recover after a few days of treatment.

The number of infected people may have increased due to the recent assembly conventions and crowds as well.

Dr Ashish Shrestha, Spokesperson at the Patan Hospital said that there are currently around 38 COVID—19 patients in the hospital. The number was around 20 just five days earlier.

He further stressed that people testing positive for the SARS-CoV-2 in Polymerase Chain reaction rest (PCR) has increased to 40 per cent in the last five days.

“Daily 100-150 people are coming for the PCR testing in the hospital and around 40 per cent are testing positive for the virus,” He added.
