Nepalgunj, Mar. 25: The Muslim scholars (Maulana) in Banke have come together in a bid to eradicate the practice of dowry, which is growing among the Muslim communities in the district in recent years.
“Strict action will be taken against those who give and take dowry,” said Mufti Maulana Mohammed Kaifulwara Khan, coordinator of the Olema Council.
“The Council has prepared a plan to punish -- socially and religiously -- those who are involved in giving and taking dowry. In the first phase, we have planned to raise awareness on the effects of the dowry system.”
Likewise, famous religious leader and former central member at Nepal Haji Committee Maulana Abdul Jabbar Manjari said that the Council was formed to address various social and cultural ills afflicting the Muslim community.
“The practice of giving and receiving dowry do not exist in Islam religion,” he said.
He added that the Council would be launching various programmes concerning dowry and drug abuse, among others at various schools in an effort to wipe them out.
