Music video director Karki lobbying for musicians’ rights

It would not be wrong to say that he has now become an integral part of the Nepali music industry.

He has been associated with the Nepali music industry for more than a decade and has directed many songs that have succeeded in winning the hearts of the audience.

Besides directing videos, Karki has also been taking the initiative to secure the rights of musicians, artistes other technicians through NepCine Company.

NepCine is a company that has been promoting and managing Nepali songs and films globally for the past decade.

With the launch of the service, the company will now manage the copyright of music and provide legal permission for the public or commercial use of such rights, said Karki.

Karki, who has been involved in the music industry for more than a decade, has directed many hit music videos.

He is also the president of the Music Video Directors Guild of Nepal.

Directing about 100 music videos over a decade, he has given breaks to many new artistes like Sudit Shrestha, Bikram Budhathoki, Garima Sharma and others.

 Lately, he has been one of the most sought-after and highest-paid music video directors in the local music industry.

Karki likes to experiment with music videos and he has given modernity to most of his music videos by embracing Nepali tradition and culture.

In many of his music videos, he has emphasised the Nepali rural environment, local costumes, and character.

His music videos including Naboli Naboli, Kale Keta 2, Keto Ali Kamaune hos, Timro Sansar, Yesto Maya, Dharti Aakash, Maile Boleko Chhaina, Aakhama Basau Malai, Mero Desh Nepal, and Makuri are popular among the audience.

Talking to The Rising Nepal, he said, “I always seek to make impactful music videos that highlight the Nepali authentic culture.”

Lately, many of his music videos are commercially successful.

In his music videos, he tries to show the true lifestyle of people from the Terai, Hills, and Mountain through the artistes.

He argues that his music videos have been commercially successful because of their originality.

He was born in Tikapur, Kailali, and his struggle and hard works have now become a source of inspiration for young people who want to take a career in filmmaking and directing.

He further outshined his knowledge in direction as he studied film direction in the United States.

He studied two years of film direction course at Minnesota State University, Moorhead, Minnesota America.

Karki is the first Nepali music video director to win an international award. He received Best Music Video Concept Award (as a director) for video Keto Ali Kamaune Hos at the 2nd Roshni Reels International Short Film Festival- 2021 from Maharashtra, India.

Likewise, he has also directed short films like Jeevan Jovan Sagun, Job Application, Garibi, Radhika, Chaupadhi, Sapana, Prem Katha, and Daijo.

He has received multiple awards and appreciations for the music video and short film direction.

 He also bagged several awards like Best Director of the Year for Music Video at the 3rd Global Nepali Film Award, Denver, Colorado, USA in 2018, Best Director of the Year for short film Job Application at 1st Khumbu Kolsch Global Nepali Film Award, Denver, Colorado, the USA in 2016.

Kakri said that he was currently busy with the pre-production work for Gurkhas The Story of a Bravery film. This is his feature film which he said is a big-budget film. This film will be made in multiple languages like Nepali, Hindi, Chinese, and a few other Indian regional languages, said Karki.

Likewise, he is working on his upcoming music videos such as Mayale Mayale, Chal Chal, Ritto Ritto, Ready Vayera Basnu and Hoi Mero Piyari.
