By Our Correspondent, Tanahun, Apr. 22: Shiva Raj Ale, a farmer of Bhimad Municipality-9, Tanahun, has succeeded to produce young Boer goats at his own firm. Two small -- one male and another female -- Boer goats were born in his firm on Monday.

He had brought a male Boer from Australia and female from Bandipur to produce the kids. "The female one was given to me as a reward for being the best farmer," he recalled.

With this, the compulsion of visiting Australia to purchase a male Boer goat has ended.

Ale was involved in the business for a decade and he finally succeeded to produce young Boer goats in his own firm this year. Before this, he used to purchase male Boer goats from Australia to produce kids.

"Bringing Boers from abroad had stopped after the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic and I tried to produce them in my own firm," he said.

According to him, a mature male Boer goat is required for reproductive purpose and he used to bring one from Australia each time.

Ale said he ended the trend of sending money to foreign markets to purchase male Boer goats. Farmers were compelled to pay Rs. 400,000 to import a mature male/female Boer goat. Boer goats have huge market demand because they are weightier than local Khari goats.

Ale, the owner of Srijansil Bakhra Firm (Creative Goat Firm), has experienced that the growth of Boer goats was four times greater than local goats. "Local goats’ weight increases by 80 grams each day whereas Boer goats’ weight increases bu 320 grams at the same duration. It is the reason it has greater demand in the market," he said.

There are 120 goats, 40 grown up and other young ones, in his firm now. He earns around Rs.1.6 million profit from this business each year. There were only 10 goats when he began the business some 10 years ago.

Ale was a civil engineer student at that time when he got an opportunity to visit a Boer goat farm in Bandipur. "I saw a brighter future in this business after the visit to the farm," he said. He visited Israel to learn modern techniques in this regard.

Four workers work in his firm. He said he earns Rs. 1.5 million each month from the business now.
