Kathmandu, Sept. 7: “Co-husband” (Sahayak Shreeman), a documentary film based on the polyandry practice prevalent in the Himalayas of Nepal, has been awarded in the 19th International Kansk Video Festival held in Russia from August 23 to 29.
Filmmakers from various countries, including Russia, USA and UK had participated in the festival.
The panel of judges awarded “Co-Husband” the best film of the festival with the Grand Prix Awards 2020.
Director of the film Ganesh Pandey said through Zoom, “This is a great honour not only for me but also for Nepal and all young filmmakers.”
Director Pandey has become world famous following the making of his documentary “Bhagyale Bachekaharu” a few years ago. Now again his documentary “Co-husband “ has bagged the prestigious award.
Earlier, the film had also won the best documentary film along with a prize of 1,000 US dollars in Nepal International Film Festival.
The 35-minute documentary based on the polyandry practice was shot in Humla of Karnali State.
Although the practice of marrying the same woman by all brothers of a family looks strange, it is still prevalent in some mountainous districts of Nepal.
In Humla, especially in the Lama community, there is still a tradition to marry the wife of the elder brother by his younger brothers.
Director Pandey has made this film after a research of four years.
The film is produced by Shine Media and is written and directed by Pandey himself.
