Sarlahi, Dec. 23: Annapurna Sugar Mill in Dhankaul of Sarlahi district has started paying dues to sugarcane farmers.
The mill has begun sending farmers’ dues for the last three-four years to their bank accounts from Sunday.
It has informed the District Administrative Office that Rs. 8 million and Rs. 10.1 million was sent to the accounts on Sunday and Monday respectively.
They have pledged to pay Rs. 10 million to the farmers on Tuesday, said Surendra Poudel, Chief District Officer of Sarhali.
The mill had started making the payments after the police issued arrest order to its owner Rakesh Agrawal. However, it refused to provide complete details of its total liability.
According to the sugarcane farmers, the mill has a liability of about Rs. 170 million. As it failed to pay the cane prices to the farmers, they are forced to organise a sit-in protest at Maitighar in the Capital. They are holding the protest programme for the last several days in Kathmandu while it is the harvesting season back home.
There are three sugar mills in the district – Annapurna, Indushankar and Mahalaxmi.
