Kawasoti, Feb : 10 The residents of Kawasoti, Nawalpur in Nawalparanshi, have been able to kill two birds with one stone through the means of waste segregation. By separating their biodegradable and non-biodegradable wastes, not only are they keeping their surroundings clean but are also producing biogas to meet their energy needs.

According to Lekhnath Basyal, chairman of the Kawasoti Agricultural Market Centre, a 50-cubic metre biogas plant has been constructed to manage the generated waste and produce biogas. The plant was set up with an investment of Rs 800,000 out of which Rs 500,000 was invested by the Alternative Energy Promotion Centre, Lalitpur and Rs 300,000 by the market centre.

“The generated biogas is currently supplied to the local slaughterhouse and hotels,” Basyal said. “The locals are also excited because they have been able to earn money from waste,” he added.

This has also aided the local government in its waste management efforts.
