Gaighat, Dec. 23: A farmer of Bhulke in Katari Municipality-5 of Udayapur, who has been commercially rearing Kalij pheasants, has become worried due to lack of market to sell the fowls.
Chudamani Hamal, who started a business by opening Anandaraj Kalij and Livestock Farm with an investment of around Rs. 1.5 million earned after working in Malaysia for three years, is worried that the Kalij are not sold.
Proprietor of the farm Hamal said that there was no sale at the time of selling the Kalij pheasants.

He said that he was worried about the loss of investment instead of earning profit from the sale of birds.
"I have not got any government job, the government has not given me any other employment opportunity, so I started a Kalij business with my own investment. But now, I am also worried about not being able to sell the birds," said Hamal.

He said that he started the Kalij farm by taking two bighas of land on lease for Rs. 40,000 per annum for 10 years.
He said, "I have heard that it is being sold at the rate of Rs. 3,500 per Kalij in the urban markets, including the Kathmandu Valley. But in my farm, even if I sell a Kalij at Rs. 3,000, there is not much sale, so now I am thinking of selling it by contacting big hotels."

Three months ago, 700 pheasants were bought from Butwal at the rate of Rs. 1,000 each.
About Rs. 1 million has been spent in the construction of Kalij coop and necessary physical structures but the fowls have not been sold and the feed has to be increased day by day, he said.
He said that he is worried that the investment will be wasted.

He said that at present his farm has about 500 fully grown male Kalij weighing about 3 kgs for meat and they are sold in the market at the rate of Rs. 3,000 each.
