By Ajay Chhetri, Kathmandu, July 1: The government is gearing up to achieve the expenditure target with less than two weeks left for the end of this fiscal year.

According to the statistics of the Financial Comptroller General Office, the aggregate expenditure in the span of the last two weeks surpassed Rs 66.6 billion, including Rs 10.6 billion in June 29 which is highest ever spending of the month. It is conspicuous amount in comparison to the trend of the spending of the preceding months.  

The government had been spending Rs 82.48 billion in an average until mid-May but it started to accelerate much faster in the last two months. In between mid-May and mid-June, it spent Rs 93.57 billion which is quite larger than the average spending of the first 10 months of the fiscal year.

Similarly, the government has also galvanized the size of capital expenditure – crucial for the development of infrastructure- at an exponential rate as time is running out for this Fiscal Year. The average capital expenditure for the first 11 months of the current fiscal is Rs 13.04 billion. Meanwhile, the spending in the last two weeks surpassed Rs. 17.15 billion.

Despite the government efforts to recalibrate the size of expenditure before current fiscal year ends, the expenditure is still chasing behind the stated target. The government is supposed to spend the aggregate expenditure of Rs 1344.68 billion. In which it had set to spend the capital expenditure of Rs 283.04 billion, recurrent expenditure of Rs 914.78 billion and financial expenditure of Rs 156.86 billion in the mid-term review in February.
