Kathmandu, Jun.1: If everything goes as planned, the dry port being constructed in Chobhar, in Kirtipur Municipality-6, in Kathmandu, will come into operation within the first month of upcoming fiscal year 2021/22.
About 85 percent of the work, which is being constructed under two sections -- national competitive bidding and international competitive bidding -- has been completed so far.
The construction of physical infrastructures related to the port at the bottom of the Chobhar Hill is completed, as is the construction of quarters and official buildings. Yuvak Dangol, project director of Nepal Intermodal Transportation Development Board (NITDB), said that the project works was moving steadily even during the time of restrictions.
“Our target is to complete all remaining works by June 29, which is also the deadline of the project. Around 130 workers have been working on the construction site in an effort to complete the project in stimulated time,” he said.
The budget book of fiscal year 2021/22 has also mentioned that the port would come into operation from the first month of that year.
Dangol added that they were coordinating with custom office to manage the the port.
The World Bank Group has provided assistance worth around Rs. 22 billion for the project. It covers an area of 228 ropanis of land in Chobhar, which belongs to the Himal Cement Factory.
The purpose of the port is to store the imported goods. Upon completion, it will have a capacity of accommodating 626 containers, parking facility for 205 trucks, warehouses, litigation shed, customs administrative building, banks, as well as loading and unloading facilities.
The NITDB awarded the construction contract to the Aashish Joint Venture and Lumbini-Koshi and Neupane joint venture in August of 2018.
