Bajura, Mar. 7: The Agriculture Knowledge Centre Bajura has been training most farmers of Bajura to cultivate potatoes with new technology.
The Centre has been teaching farmers to cultivate potatoes with new technology under the Chief Minister Programme as the land in most parts of Bajura is appropriate for potato farming and it is easy for the locals to make a living from the farming.
Motikala Rawat, a local of Khaptad Chhededaha Gaunpalika-5, said, "We used to cultivate potatoes for consumption only. Now, a market has been established in the village. So, we encouraged for commercial production of potatoes."
She said that the new technology of potato production has become more productive for the farmers than the previous local potato.
Min Prasad Jaishi, information officer at Agriculture Knowledge Centre, Bajura, said that they have been teaching 225 leading farmers of Khaptad Chhededaha Gaunpalika, who have been cultivating potatoes traditionally, to cultivate them with new technology.
He said that a total of 425 quintals, including 125 quintals of new variety and 300 quintals of local potatoes, have been planted in 550 ropanis of land.
Chairman of Khaptad Chhededaha Gaunpalika Nara Bahadur Rawat said that the municipality has been giving subsidy to the farmers who have been cultivating potato only as a vegetable for the decades.
He said that the municipality has been investing heavily in the agricultural sector with the objective of uplifting livelihood of the youths going to different parts of the country for employment.
