By Chhetu Sherpa, Kathmandu, Mar. 29: Some 40 per cent of domestic flights has been cancelled due to low visibility.

Pratap Bahadur Tiwari, General Manager of Tribhuvan International Airport, Kathmandu, informed that 41 out of the 101 flights that were scheduled to fly on Sunday were cancelled.

On Saturday out of the 115 scheduled 50 of them were cancelled. The smog affected domestic flights more than the international flights.

For an aircraft to take off or land, visibility for a naked eye needs to be five kilometers and for the Instrument Landing System (ILS) it needs to be 1600 meters. However, the visibility for the naked eye reduced to two kilometers and for the ILS it reduced to 500 meters since Friday, said General Manager Tiwari.

The smog affected domestic flights more than the international flights.

On Sunday, airline operators were flying till 11 pm. The Trinhuvan International Airport witnesses 115 take offs and landings every day. There are about 15 to 20 International flights that serve Kathmandu. Due to long spell of dryness followed by no rainfall and winds has led to ideal conditions for a smog to take place.
