Kathmandu, Dec 1: Nepali Army peacekeepers from the Temporary Operating Base (TOB) under the Kalidhwaj Battalion deployed in the Cueibet area of South Sudan (UNMISS) for peacekeeping on November 25 have averted a possible ethnic violence there.

The deployment spot lies some 70 kilometres northwest from the Battalion Headquarters, Rumbek of South Sudan.
Violence between Kongor and Ayeil ethnic groups escalated after a Kongor man was killed in a clash at the Cattle Camp near the Cueibet area in the northwest, according to a press statement issued by the Directorate of Public Relations and Information of the Army Headquarters.
With the information that violence could erupt, a small squad of the quick reaction force (QRF) was mobilised in the area to prevent clashes between the two sides.
After the security situation in the area returned to normalcy, other components of the UN mission began working to restore peace among various ethnic communities there, according to the statement.
The United Nations has highly appreciated the contribution made by the Nepali Army peacekeepers in preventing the recurrence of such incidents in South Sudan, which has faced genocide due to ethnic conflict.
