Three cases of new variant of COVID-19 confirmed in Nepal

By Keshab Raj Poudel, Kathmandu, Jan. 18: The new strain of the novel coronavirus has been detected in three people who had returned from the United Kingdom a few days ago.

Issuing a press statement on Monday, Dr. Jageshwor Gautam, spokesperson of the Ministry of Health and Population, informed that in the test carried out at Hong Kong-based laboratory, the new mutant of SARS-CoV-2 was detected in three people.

After six persons who had come to Nepal from the UK tested positive for COVID-19, their swab samples were sent to a laboratory in Hong Kong to ascertain whether they were infected with the new strain of COVID-19 or not.

The report of the Hong Kong's laboratory, which came out on Monday revealed that a 28-year-old female and two males aged 67 and 32 were detected with the new variant of the novel coronavirus.

The press statement says that all three COVID-19 patients were asymptomatic.
